Ferragosto Fever

You may have seen our Instagram posts explaining the origins of Ferragosto and some of the kinds of celebrations that take place in Italy under the title “palio” — not just the horse race kind in Siena! Now that you have learned the history of this holiday, we’ve prepared fifteen words and terms designed to help you celebrate. Buon Ferragosto a tutti!


battello – rowboat / small boat
brace – grill
fare il bagno – to go swimming (in the sea)
gelato – ice cream
grigliata – cook-out or barbecue
mare – sea
palio – race, often horse race, and the prize won at it (piece of prized fabric)
piazza – town square
sabbia – sand
sagra – local public banquet serving traditional regional dishes
scogli – rocks (in the context of rocky beaches)
spiaggia – beach
traghetto – ferry, often used to access smaller islands or arcipelago systems
tuffo – a dip or jump in the water, as in “Facciamoci un tuffo nel mare!”
ultima spiaggia – last hope, last resort (idiomatic)
